The Phenomenon of the Cauliflower Ear

Randy Couture's cauliflower ear

Having watched a lot of reruns of The Ultimate Fighter recently, I have to say that I am fascinated by the hypertrophic and distracting flesh often found on the sides of MMA fighters and wrestlers known as the "cauliflower ear".  I was intrigued enough to do my homework (read: looked it up on Wikipedia) where I made an interesting discovery.  I had assumed that the enlarged, puffy ears were simply a function of constant irritation of the ear due primarily to grappling, and that was partly true.  In fact, what happens, apparently, is that small blood vessels in the ear are blown and bleed due to repetitive trauma, which causes the cartilage of the ear to be deformed and the skin to separate from the cartilaginous part of the ear.  The underlying cartilage is separated from its blood supply and fibrous tissue grows in the region of trauma, resulting in the "cauliflower ear".  The fibrous tissue is really just connective tissue that lacks a definitive function and only forms because something has to form there.  The ear cannot be returned to a normal appearance without surgery, which clearly, a professional fighter or other athlete who will likely continue to be exposed to the same or similar trauma is unlikely to get.  Check out a few examples of cauliflower ear and reconsider your dreams of auditioning for The Ultimate Fighter and one day entering the ring against GSP!

Snooki Has the Moves On WWE's Wrestlemania!

In case you missed it, Snooki showed the world that oompa loompas and gremlins are not to be played with because they fight back.  Snooki does this incredible flip and pins her opponent against the ropes.  It truly has to be seen to be believed.  Unfortunately, it sounds like the crowd was booing Snooki, but you can't please everyone.

Snooki Hits Up Monday Night RAW

This is sad, mostly because I think the last Jersey Shore castmate to go on the WWE was Angelina Pivarnick who's... well, ya know.  She's a mess.  I guess Snooki is a mess, too, but she definitely has more credibility than any other characters on the show.  It's funny because a month or two ago, Snooki went on the 4th hour of the Today Show with Kathy Lee and Hoda and Kathy told Snooki to respect herself eliciting a "WTF!  You should talk".  But maybe Kathy was right.  Someone on the rise like Snooki does not need to go on Monday Night Raw.  Anyway, just watch the clip.

Dwayne Johnson, AKA The Rock, Makes Appearance on Monday Night Raw

I have to admit that I missed the show, but The Rock's appearance on RAW last night is up onYouTube for all to see.  The Rock announced that he would be hosting Wrestlemania this year.  If you were like me, you thought that the Rock had thrown in his wrestling boots for the 9-figure deal that he signed with Disney (how else do you explain movies like Race To Witch Mountain?), but it looks like he's not done with wrestling just yet.  Can you smell what the Rock is cookin'?
