Chuck Lidell Allows Justin Bieber And His Dad To Get Photo At UFC 132

In case you missed it, UFC 132 went down a couple days ago: Dominic Cruz retained his title against Urijah Faber (who I posted doing the dougie two weeks ago) and Tito Cruz (don't call it a come back) upset Ultimate Fighter: Nogueira vs. Mir champ Ryan Bader.  But that's not what this post is about.  Living MMA legend Chuck Lidell allowed the f*cking Biebers to take a photo with him.  Not that long ago (actually a few months ago), I posted about how Bieber's Dad has a rep as kind of a douche; I think he was opening an MMA school or something even though he's never been in a fight, and now here they are, posing next to a smiling Chuck Lidell.  Really, Chuck?  Where's your pride?

Maybe, just maybe, Chuck Lidell does not know who these two are.  A man can hope, can't he?

Yet Another MMA Fighter Tries To Do The Dougie. This Time It's Alistair Overeem

We've seen Urijah Faber and Jon Jones try to "dougie", and now it's Ariel Helwani's and Alistair Overeem's turn.  I'm pretty sure they're doing it wrong.

Learn The Dougie From UFC Champs Jon Jones and Urijah Faber

I have seen at least three different "dougie" videos and I still have absolutely no clue how to even begin this dance, so I am now convinced that it is impossible to do.  In spite of that, I got a kick out of this video of former WEC featherweight champ Urijah Faber and current UFC lightweight champ Jon Jones doing the dougie in what I presume is Faber's trailer.  This is wrong on many levels, but easily the second funniest thing I've seen all day (after the vid of an Australian newscaster telling the Dalai Lama a Dalai  Lama joke).

Chad Ochocinco Strikes Deal With Tapout To Promote Gold Tooth Mouth Guards

Interesting story.  It was announced this week that Chad Ochocinco (who I am pretty sure is back to calling himself Chad Johnson at this point) has struck a deal with MMA retailer and sponsor Tapout to promote a new line of Ochocinco-inspired gold mouthguards.  Ochocinco has always been a guy that loves attention (his most recent attention gathering move being, of course, his engagement to hot mess reality star Evelyn Lozada, but that's a tale for another time) and his gold mouth guard was just another way for him to create a memorable image for fans and haters alike.  I don't know whether to see this as a douchebag move or a strike of marketing genius.  Frankly, I am sure that there are lots of guys that wouldn't mind stepping into the octagon with a gold grill like Chad so I am sure these pieces will sell like hot cakes.  Leave it up to the crazy guys from Tapout to come up with something like this!

Getting rid of the gold mohawk was an awesome idea, Chad.  Gold teeth: One.  Gold mohawk: Zero.

The Phenomenon of the Cauliflower Ear

Randy Couture's cauliflower ear

Having watched a lot of reruns of The Ultimate Fighter recently, I have to say that I am fascinated by the hypertrophic and distracting flesh often found on the sides of MMA fighters and wrestlers known as the "cauliflower ear".  I was intrigued enough to do my homework (read: looked it up on Wikipedia) where I made an interesting discovery.  I had assumed that the enlarged, puffy ears were simply a function of constant irritation of the ear due primarily to grappling, and that was partly true.  In fact, what happens, apparently, is that small blood vessels in the ear are blown and bleed due to repetitive trauma, which causes the cartilage of the ear to be deformed and the skin to separate from the cartilaginous part of the ear.  The underlying cartilage is separated from its blood supply and fibrous tissue grows in the region of trauma, resulting in the "cauliflower ear".  The fibrous tissue is really just connective tissue that lacks a definitive function and only forms because something has to form there.  The ear cannot be returned to a normal appearance without surgery, which clearly, a professional fighter or other athlete who will likely continue to be exposed to the same or similar trauma is unlikely to get.  Check out a few examples of cauliflower ear and reconsider your dreams of auditioning for The Ultimate Fighter and one day entering the ring against GSP!

Randy Couture Taken Down At UFC 129, Retires

In spite of all the talk, GSP managed to pull out another win (his sixth consecutive title defense) last night, but the news of the night was the big fall of Randy Couture to a swift kick to the face by Lyoto Machida.  Believe it or not, Couture is 47 (Yup: FORTY SEVEN) years old going toe-to-toe with guys half his age.  He lasted seven minutes and earned a standing ovation for the effort.  IMHO, this guy has made plenty of loot (I assume) and now he can retire and play with his dogs.  What beats that?  Nothing.  Still, don't really know what's going on with Brock Lesnar.  Looks like he's staying with the UFC, at least for the time being (as the coach on the next installment of Ultimate Fighter).

Randy Couture was just a big softie anyway.  (Don't tell him I said that)

UFC Purchases Strikeforce

Dana White talks to MMAFighting.com in this AOL video about purchasing Strikeforce, which kind of harkens back to when WWE (then, WWF I think) got its hands on WCW, then ECW, you get the idea.  Dana White says it will be business as usual for Showtime-produced Strikeforce, but... who knows?
